Islamic studies is a subject that is often taught under "religious studies" in many schools and is concerned with teaching the Islamic history, laws and texts from the Quraan and hadith. Early teaching (up until middle school) focuses more on the basics of Islam such as the pillars of Islam with an emphasis on learning how to read the Quran.
